Help stop sexual abuse

Child abuse is a heinous act and sexual abuse ranks as one of the most unforgivable offenses in society. Both offenses are a complete disregard for the care and well being of the most innocent and defenseless segment of a community. Despite the egregious nature of child abuse the majority of cases go unreported and it is way more common than most would suspect.

The fact that society isn’t aware of the common nature of abuse is representative of the few cases that get reported. Due to this, the perpetrator continues to operate unfettered and has the freedom to continue harming more children.

Awareness and building an environment where children feel comfortable telling their experiences is the beginning of stopping this dangerous cycle. Avoiding the issue causes exponential suffering for children and society. Victims of child sexual abuse are at a greater risk of developing drug and alcohol problems and girls are 3 times more likely to become teen mothers.

Based on these facts alone we could dramatically impact the future health and productivity of our children by changing these statistics. The best way to achieve this is through building and educating children that they need to speak up if they see something happen or are the unfortunate victims. This is achieved through building a nonthreatening environment of warmth, trust, and comfort.

Education and building an environment that encourages children to speak up is the key.

Chattanooga’s Kids on the Block is the only organization that uniquely targets this challenging goal and statistics prove the success of their programs; however, the Chattanooga area is dangerously close to losing this amazingly powerful organization. The organization's primary funding source is no longer available, and our community can change this with small donations. We ask that you learn more about what they do, and help us support Kids on the Block. Please donate today and help us stop the cycle of abuse.

The Value of Kids on the Block: 75% of elementary school students who saw the Kids on the Block program(s) said they were more likely to talk to a grown up if they were in an uncomfortable situation.

The Mission:

Using the power of puppetry, our mission is to educate children about social concerns and differences, giving them the skills to stay safe and healthy.

THE PROGRAM: PERSONAL SAFETY: CHILD ABUSE AWARE & PREVENTION

The nationally research scripts on Personal Safety including Sexual and Physical Abuse, are targeted to 3rd grade and older students.

The curriculum uses the non-threatening medium of puppetry called Bunraku to introduce the sensitive topic to children in an age-appropriate and kid-friendly way. The curriculum is an educational tool designed to:

  • Explain and define sexual and physical abuse
  • Teach children that abuse is NEVER a child’s fault
  • Encourage children to talk with an adult they trust any time a situation feels strange or uncomfortable
  • Teach children to understand their feelings and to talk about those feelings
  • Impart personal safety information
  • Provide information about agencies and organization who offer services for families in need of help

Each program is comprised of two or more scripts and two or more puppets. Each program is followed with an interactive opportunity for children to talk with the puppets about the program and to ask questions.

THE ART OF BUNRAKU PUPPETRY

Our puppeteers/educators are trained artists in the manipulation of hand and rod puppets. They hold degrees in various disciplines, with extensive ongoing continuing education related to our program topics in efforts to maintain a high level of expertise. The puppeteers/educators dress completely in black and become the shadow behind the puppet. This illusion allows for a unique and effective form of education. As our puppets come to life, children identify with them and open up as if they were trusted friends.

Each puppet is three to four feet tall and wear real kids’ clothes and each have their own personalities and educational focuses.

We develop program specific follow-up materials for children, educators and adults/parents. Our follow up materials, such as activity sheets, adult/parent and educator resource guides and classroom activities reinforce the lessons of each educational topic.

IMPACT OF PROGRAM

Based on research and outcomes on the impact of our programs, CKOB educational programs do provide tools and skills that have and can continue to help reduce the violent activities, dropout rates, bullying, gang involvement and drug use among other issues; more effectively communicate with peers and adults; understand their own feelings and the feelings of others and most importantly that abuse is not their fault.

Our program meets the requirements of Erin’s Law which has been adopted by most states in the U.S. In addition, we are a licensed child abuse prevention agency.

Our evaluations and surveys indicate:

  • 76% of elementary school students who saw our program(s) showed a positive change in knowledge, attitude and/or behavior.
